'Mr Pop Idol' reveals Christmas market plan

Pete Waterman, speaking at last week's South Bank Forum, presented plans for a fun, Dickensian-inspired Christmas Market to be held next year in Belvedere Road which would include brass bands and a possible ice rink.

Pete Waterman – a director of County Hall but better known as Mr Pop Idol – explained that the market would run for 3-4 weeks and raise significant funds for the new Evelina Children's Hospital at St. Thomas'.

Reactions to the market were mixed; some feared that the market would hit Lower Marsh trade over the Christmas while others believed it would do much to boost the profile of Waterloo. Although Waterman emphasised that ideas and developments were in the early stages, he said the traders would not be affected. Waterman also made it clear that the forum and other significant organisations in Waterloo would be consulted on all developments.

Waterman, whose music empire is based in Borough High Street, has a recording studio complex at County Hall.
