London SE1 website team

A 99p Store is due to replace the Clarks Factory Shop in the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre.

The discount shoe shop closed last month after being cleared by a 3 for 2 sale. The 99p Store is due to open during the second week of December.

The popular chain is well-known for bargain sweets, biscuits, cake, stationery, toys. soap and shampoo. Other products include garden tools and pet care items. At present the nearest branch is at Lewisham where current offers include four Mars bars for 99p.

Meanwhile Tlon Books, which has been at the opposite end of the shopping centre for over a decade, will not be reopening. A sudden closure of the popular second hand bookshop in January 2007 proved temporary but this time stock has been removed and landlords St Modwen has secured the forfiture of the lease.

The 1000 sq ft shop unit is being advertised for rent on a three year lease by Green & Partners.

It was recently confirmed that the shopping centre will not be demolished till at least 2012 which has brought some stability to the businesses trading there.
