It is thought that the incident may have started in Hatfields when officers approached a man near Benson House close to The Anchor & Hope.

He fired a shot at the two police officers and made off on foot towards Blackfriars Road and Union Street.

Blackfriars Road was sealed off between Stamford Street and The Cut.

According to a police spokesman neither of the officers suffered gunshot injuries but were being treated for shock.

People in Union Street say that they saw armed police officers pursuing the suspect.

A police helicopter was hovering above Union Street for some time.
