Artists shortlisted for Union Street public art commission

London SE1 website team

Four artists and designers have been shortlisted in a competition to create a temporary piece of public art for Union Street as part of the Bankside Urban Forest.

Better Bankside has announced that the shortlisted artists are:

Sophie Horton – Pop up art school
Kirk:Creative and Ed Carter – Bird calls
MUF architecture/art – Forest Rides
Public Works – Union Street Press

The artists were shortlisted from over 50 submissions received in response to an open call for proposals.

The brief asked for a meaningful temporary art work and/or project to be situated in the public realm of Union Street to address the distinctive and complex environment of this key street within Bankside.

It also asked for a creative response that would complement recent Bankside Urban Forest projects that have been implemented or are underway in the neighbourhood such as at Redcross Way, Flat Iron Square and Great Suffolk Street.

The longlisted schemes were put on public display at Bankside Community Space earlier this month.

The successful artist will be appointed in early March 2012.
