St George is patron saint of many countries, regions and cities as well as groups of people such as horsemen, farmers and soldiers. The St George in Southwark Festival celebrates him as a multi cultural patron saint for the many diverse communities in the borough, bringing people together in a variety of plays and processions, reminding us of
the rich heritage of both St George and our area.
Dr Sam Riches has researched widely and written about St George and the traditions associated with him from Manchester to Turkey, from Estonia to Ethiopia.
She has been a regular visitor to the St George in Southwark Festival.
