Removal of cobbles Clink St/Cathedral St

As a relative newcomer to the area, I probably missed any prior notices about the above work. However, as Southwark Council have started removing what appears to be a historic feature, I have carried out some investigation. It appears that they are replacing the cobbles with....cobbles. I am all in favour of making sure this wonderful area continues to look its best, but in the current economic climate, can this work be really justified? I'd appreciate if anyone has any further detail or background on this, could they respond to this post. Alternatively if you can put me right if I have got the wrong impression - thanks for any info

It's part of this project:

The money comes from the Olympic precept on council tax via the GLA and has been passed on to Southwark and Lambeth to carry out the works on their bits of the riverside.

The idea is that the new cobbles are smoother and more friendly for wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters etc.
