Does anyone know what the original purpose of The Old Vic Tunnels was, and why they were built in the first place?

I've always thought they were just the structures built to hold the railway lines, like the tunnels the London Dungeon is in and where Shunt was. They look the same.

Every platform at Waterloo receives trains via an elevated viaduct system and this was the original purpose of the tunnels - it's been used for many purposes since including a wine warehouse and a mortuary.

The London Bridge Station ones were a wine warehouse at one point too. A friend of mine worked there. This was in the space between Stainer Street and Weston Street.

A mortuary at Waterloo makes sense because of the nearby London Necropolis Railway Station
