Know it's not strictly SE1 but it is Elephant (apologies if posted elsewhere, didn't see!):

Appears we're getting a Costa pretty much opposite Morrisons on the Walworth Rd:

Yes, because what Walworth Road is missing is a costa coffee. When cycling down there I often feel a physical pain at the lack of a Pret.

Costa was not to be... the JD signs are now up.

Well don't worry folks because we can all beat a wild and hasty path up to The Cut where another local supermarket has been sold out to make way for....Costa! Which is great because that will go very nicely with the Cafe Nero and Pret that sit next door to each other, almost opposite. Chains, chains and more chains....all eagerly awaiting our visits!

Incidentally, while not something in our local area, a true story all the same with real parallels with this post: there is an amazing small family-run artisan French bakery in King's Cross that is such a breath of fresh air to visit. They told me that when they came to London last year and looked for a location in King's Cross they were turned down by everyone on the grounds of, "You're not a chain, you're not proven, we don't know who you are"...until they met a guy who had always had the dream of having an artisan bakery on his premises right there in King's Cross. And so their business was born and is doing very nicely thank you.

serge the bakery is at 279 Grays Inn Rd, London WC1X 8QF. Their website is at

They are traditional French bakers, a family-run concern, and bake everything on the premises. It's a small place but really friendly and full of the famous French "ambience'!

That's two new sporty shops in the last couple of years. First Sports Direct and now JD's. Feel sorry for the other long time small business Walworth Rd sports shop.

Interesting any how in the chain sports shop market - Sports Direct maintains a zero-hours contract system for all its non-manager staff and JD's doesn't use zero-hour contracts.

The croissants at aux pains de pappy are awesome and worth a No63 bus ride / cycle up to Kings Cross. Warning though they sell out by 11 am ish.

I love the pear tart - add some double cream for a real treat!
They also do amazing sandwiches - really big and fantastic for value!

Also noticed that Kennedy's shop re-opened on the Walworth road. They also had French cakes in the window (mille feuilles, strawberry tarts)... Although I have not tried them yet, it is good to see this shop open finally.
