My family knew her better as Betty Winch. Her mother had the shop Winch in the Harper Road, almost next to Warrens the sweet shop. It was in the parade of shops between Joseph Lancaster School (now The Academy) and New Kent Road. We would go into the shop to buy biscuits, which she seem to keep in tins and jars. Hope I got that right, I'm sure Jan will know. Close up, Betty was simply stunning. Her mother was an amiable character and stocked a few luxuries like Bev (or was it Camp) coffee. RIP, nice people to know.

She lived locally then? I had no idea.

I was in Oliver at Queens Theatre in Hornchurch in 1986 and she was Mrs Bumble. She was so lovely.
