Over the weekend Southwark Council felled a couple of trees on Marshalsea Road. Must say, it was quite distressing to witness. One tree was felled completely whilst others were felled right back. Does anyone know what policy is in place re replacement?

There should be a pruning schedule, but Southwark are being coy about 'updating' it according to this page:

This has been going on all over Southwark. Some of us are so concerned that, with support from some of our councillors in the Grange and South Bermondsey wards, we have recently formed a street trees group. I noticed the works you mention on Marshalsea Rd and took some photos to add to our "album". For a multitude of reasons, this type of work should only take place between November and March when trees are dormant (unless people or property are in immediate danger). There is a comprehensive tree strategy document on Southwark's website which covers replanting policy among many other things, but this seems to have been replaced with what the arboricultural department describe as a "Tree Recovery Plan where a historic backlog of works numbering thousands of jobs are being processed". This is due to run until Spring 2020 and then "It will not be our intention to undertake this activity at this time of year in the future”

Send me a pm if you’d like to know more about the Street Trees Group and our mission.
