Well, I'm sure, like me, anyone on Shad Thames was waiting with baited breath to see what new restaurant would take the place of the Apprentice.

Anticipation mounted as the inside began to take shape, and the eaterie started to look like quite a respectable joint.

And then - oh - it's another bleedin' Pizza chain. Zizzi. We already have two chains, Ask and Pizza Express on the Shad, and now a third within fift y yards.

Methinks I will boycott by way of protest!

Not to mention La Lanterna on Mill St - by far the best IMHO.

The problem is that pizza is popular with the masses. Also, generic Italian is something that's easy for a corporate chain to do....

I know. I was looking forward to a restaurant featuring the cuisine of Kamchatka.

Oh well. Let them eat pizza

...if you press it, they will come.

Pizza Express merged with ASK some months ago - so they are all in the same ownership!!!!!

Ah yes - I'd forgotten about that.

The list of locations being targeted by the Ask/Pizza Express /Zizzi combine makes interesting reading:

Hmmm... What would a new Pizza Express in The Cut be at the expense of?

Damn!! I've been waiting patiently for that yodelling-cowboy-themed-black-pudding-and-cider-gastropod-gastropub-rugby-league-friendly-waitrose for ages.

Guess I'll just have to pretend to feel genuinely aggrieved.

...if you press it, they will come.
