Roots and Shoots (Walnut Tree Walk, SE11) is holding an Apple Day on 12 noon to 5.00pm on Saturday 23 October. As well as exciting competitions (longest peel), art stuff for kids, and 50 varieties of apple on sale, they will be selling Lambeth Apple Juice, using pressing equipment from a farm in Wales, and building a corn queen to be used by the Lions Part Players in Borough Market's October Bounty Festival the following day (24 October).

Roots and Shoots, lots has been written about them before on this forum, but they are a sort of community/educational garden and a long-established training facility for teenagers with learning difficulties, are also looking for volunteers, either for the apple pressing - they have yet to decide a date but the contact is Ian or Amanda on 7587 1131 - or for the apple day itself.

Roots and Shoots events really are the local community pulling together, and a great chance for anyone who has recently moved to this area to get to know another side of the area. Plus the pressing might be a chance to try out SE1 skills before pressing our own.
