From my office in Great Dover Street I see cars driving past all the time with a large white triangle on the roof. Does anyone know what they are used for? Or why they have this white triangle?

Would they be cars for serious crime squad identifiable from the air?

I seem to recall that they are the cars who are part of the Southwark mini road pricing trial. It's a way of checking manually whether the electronic readers in the cars are being picked up by the cameras as they go past.

Can't immediately find the reference, but here is the long thread about the trial last year.
