I live on The Cut and occasionally in the past have heard the sound of horses hooves trotting along the street in the early hours, but always been too sleepy to get up and have a look. I've always assumed they were police horses. On Monday morning (10 Nov)I happened to be awake and bored by insomnia, when I heard horses hooves at about 6.10am and took a look out of the window.
I caught the tail end of a procession with at least two, elaborate, horse drawn carriages, sort of regal-looking. I only saw the second clearly, a couple of passengers were peering out. The carriages were followed by a 4 wheel drive/Range Rover type vehicle, and then a couple of mounted police.
They were going from the Old Vic end towards Southwark Station
About 45 mins later, I heard hooves again. This time it wasn't nearly as intriguing. Police horses seemed to be escorting a group of horse-riders back in the other direction.
Seriously, what's going on?! Even as I write this, I'm wondering if I was hallucinating or dreaming, but I DID see those carriages...all very surreal
Perhaps yo could get a story out of this for next Halloween? Maybe clandestine rehearsals for a senior royal's funeral, because, naturally, they would be touring Southwark on their way en route for a quick half in B.H.S.?
Weird story -I'll try to wake up in time to witness this( but I woun't hold my breath on this !)
I've lived in The Cut for 25 years and am now familiar with this event. It is linked to the Lord Major's Show and it is the same routine every year; I could set my calendar by it! It is the same day and hour of the week when the horse and carriages get taken out in preparation for the show and the same day and time of the week they return. Where they are stored during those 7 days I have no idea. It is quite a sight.
