A year ago we opened a suggestion box to hear your ideas for what we could do to improve this website in 2006.

12 months and 4.9 million page views later, we would very much like your ideas for 2007.

I'd be very grateful if you could spare a moment to head over to and jot down any thoughts about how we could make this site more useful and more relevant to you.

The comments last year were many and varied. Some were simple ideas that were easy to implement straight away - eg:

can you change the default time period in the forum search function to all dates rather than last 30 days

(It now seaches the last year by default.)

Others commented on features they particularly appreciated, such as the News Map which was then a recent innovation.

Another example of something we have tried to act on this year:

More linkage between the forum and the other parts of the site - so if a restaurant is mentioned on the forum, the link is included on the Restaurants and Bars page

And this one got implemented recently:

If there was a way of gathering people's recommendations for plumbers / butchers / electricians etc on a single page that would be great.

See if you haven't looked already.

Someone else asked for more RSS feeds. We've added loads of feeds during the year, and look out for more in 2007.

Those are just a few examples to show that we did take on board and implement many of the things suggested in last year's exercise.

Please let us know how we can make the site better - whether it's by fixing some small irritation or adding a major new feature.

Thanks to those who have sent in their comments.

The suggestions box will be open until the end of Tuesday, but of course your comments and ideas are welcome 365 days a year via the Feedback section of the forum or by PM or email.

To address a couple of the things that have been mentioned by people.

One new forum user mentioned that some of the buttons in the Private message system were confusingly labelled. I have now made the change they suggested (Replacing 'Post message' with 'Send private message').

mogoot asked for instructions about adding formatting to forum messages. Since the summer we have had a tool bar to make this easier:

Click on the ? icon for help/instructions.
