Trustees

Borough Market

About this role

Borough Market, which is run by a charitable trust, is currently recruiting new trustees to ensure that the 1,000 year old market continues to thrive long into the future.

Borough Market's trustees are all volunteers, drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds. As a charity, the Market is expected to provide a place to buy high quality, sustainable, fresh produce for the public, but also play a role in the wider debate around food and its impact on society, the environment and public health.

This year, the Market is undergoing some exciting changes, and is currently looking to recruit some new trustees to help shape the next stage of its development, by working with the other trustees, staff and, most importantly, traders and customers to make sure it remains a world class produce market.

Bengü Said, interim chair of the trustees of Borough Market said: "Being a trustee of Borough Market, an organisation with a rich history and a global reputation, is a real privilege. But it also carries with it a significant responsibility: this is an institution that has been serving the people of London in one form or another for around 1,000 years, and it is the task of its trustees to ensure that it continues to thrive long into the future, for the benefit of subsequent generations. For anyone who cares about food and people and wants to give something back to the local community, taking on the task of fulfilling that responsibility is a genuinely enriching experience."

Who are we looking for?

Borough Market is hoping to hear from people with diverse backgrounds, both culturally and professionally. Ideal candidates will live locally, show a clear understanding of the way the Market operates, and if they have a particular specialism, be keen to share their expertise. Above all else, Borough Market looking for enthusiastic people who have: a demonstrable love of Borough Market, a willingness to give back to the community and time to devote to the role.

As well as playing an active role on the trust's board, trustees would also be expected to sit on and contribute to the work of at least one of its sub committees and working groups.
