Southwark historian and author John D Beasley has joined the Southwark Says No campaign.
In an exclusive interview with Bankside Press (publishers of this website) he says that he is voting No in next Thursday's referendum and warns that the office of an executive Political Mayor would mean one person having far too much power with little check on decision making. The author is also warning that Southwark could find itself losing its Civic Mayor in favour of a Political Mayor on a minority vote and is urging residents to use their vote.
Meanwhile the Southwark Says No campaign is forecasting that a change to an American-style mayor could cost council ratepayers an extra one million pounds. The political Mayoral salary for the term of office has been set at a total of £260,000.
