Design Museum considers quitting Southwark for Commonwealth Institute

It emerged this week that the Design Museum is in talks with developer Chelsfield Partners about a possible relocation to the listed 1960s building in Holland Park.

A museum spokesman confirmed to the the Architects' Journal that a move to the Commonwealth Institute was a real possibility, but insisted that talks are at "very early stages"

The Design Museum, which opened in a former banana warehouse at Butler's Wharf in 1989, has long complained that its premises are too small.

The museum has previously considered moves to a site alongside Tate Modern at Bankside and to the Potters Fields coach park site next to Tower Bridge.
