SE1 United's first fashion project show, held as part of the Lambeth Summer University, filled the Spirit Level of the Royal Festival Hall last week.
The catwalk showcase marked the end of a two-week fashion and textiles project for 11 to 19-yea-olds. It was run by SE1 United, the local youth forum which is based at the Spirit Level in the Royal Festival Hall.
The colourful collections included evening dresses, casual wear and a Michael Jackson tribute piece.
The course provided an introduction to the fashion industry, from design, pattern cutting and sewing to styling, modelling and setting up a fashion show.
Young people had the opportunity to try something new and diversify, or focus on the area they found the most interesting.
Workshops in fashion drawing and customising provided practical sources of inspiration. Each young designer created a portfolio of style ideas and picked one design to turn into a costume for the catwalk.
SE1 United is a youth forum aimed at 10 to 21-year-olds. The forum was set up in 2003 and is run and managed by young people.
SE1 United reaches out to over a thousand young people every year through a range of programmes and activities, including work experience, youth project management, cultural and residential trips.
