The Bishop of Southwark, Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, presided and preached at a special service on Sunday night to mark the 50th anniversary of the consecration of St Philip's Church in Avondale Square.
The service was attended by Simon Hughes MP, who read the first lesson, and the Mayor of Southwark Cllr Althea Smith.
The church, consecrated in 1963, replaced a Victorian building destroyed during World War II.
Early visitors to the newly-built church included Princess Margaret.
Last summer the City of London Corporation's Avondale Square estate held its own half-century celebrations in combination with a Diamond Jubilee party.
