The fire brigade was called at 9.07am and crews from Dowgate, Dockhead, Peckham, Whitechapel and Lambeth were sent to the scene.

The restaurant – which closed in mid-May – occupied the ground floor of the former Hartley gastropub (previously The Pagoda) at the corner of Tower Bridge Road and Webb Street.

Tower Bridge Road was partially closed to traffic and bus services were diverted while a total of 16 emergency vehicles were attending the incident.

The fire brigade said it did not believe anyone had been injured.
