Bankside Residents' Forum has urged Southwark Council to support efforts for community-led affordable housing on sites in the Bankside area being redeveloped by Transport for London.

Amir Eden and Marion Marples, chair and secretary of Bankside Residents' Forum, presented a deputation to Southwark's cabinet meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

BRF is calling Southwark Council and TfL to explore opportunities for local people to take a leading role in the development of affordable housing, inspired by pioneering SE1-based home-builders like Coin Street Community Builders and Leathermarket Community Benefit Society.

"We support the the council in its desire to build much needed genuinely affordable housing. We acknowledge the issues regarding the economics of house-building and viability," said Amir Eden.

"We also acknowledge that whilst it is true that more genuinely affordable housing could be built off-site as opposed to on-site, we are sure that the cabinet would agree that we must ensure that Bankside remains a mixed community true to its historical past.

"In the spirit of great legends such as Ted Bowman and George Nicholson and what they have achieved with the success of Coin Street Community Builders we seek to work with the council and all relevant stakeholders to ensure genuinely affordable affordable housing is built through community-led housing at TfL's Landmark Court Site on Southwark Street."

Council leader Peter John and cabinet member for regeneration Mark Williams have agreed to meet BRF for further discussions.

TfL recently named Triangle London Developments as its partner for a major mixed-use development on the site known as Landmark Court at the junction of Southwark Street and Redcross Way.
