Lecture by Professor Giovanni Mann as part of Feed Your Mind - King's College London's festival of food and ideas.
In parts of the world, particularly in the Far East, where diets are rich in soya and other plant-derived products, scientists have noted alower incidence of heart disease. Increasingly, research shows that foods like soya, dark chocolate, tea and red wine, which are rich inpolyphenols, can have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health. Soya contains estrogen-like compounds which afford vascular protection and other plant-derived compounds (such as sulforaphane contained in broccoli and other vegetables) also stimulate antioxidant genes that help prevent heart disease and stroke. This talk will explain, in a digestible form, the complex science of current research into the cardiovascular health benefits of plant-derived compounds.
