"Female Cures"

Behind the Scenes

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

This session includes the unmissable opportunity to handle some of the museum's objects and get closer than ever before to part of the wonderful collection.

Often a taboo subject, this session unpacks the story of women's medicine in the past. Some you might find quite surprising!

Find out about Queen Victoria's interest in cannabis and discover how a mummified hand could help a woman's ailments. 'Women's problems' have a long history of being shrouded in mystery. In the past even medical professionals - usually male! - seem to have had strange ideas about their symptoms and consequences. This is a chance to explore how views and treatments have changed over time.

These sessions are designed for people in the local community to enjoy the RPSGB's fantastic collections close up.

Some of these sessions will include object handling whilst others give you the opportunity to see objects rarely displayed.
