The Seashell and the Clergyman
A silent film classic with live accompaniment by Minima
Arguably the first example of Surrealist film, Germaine Dulac's film The Seashell and the Clergyman (France 1928, 39mins) is based on a screenplay by Antonin Artaud. Predating Luis Buñuel's Un chien andalou, this dark, erotically-charged film is an hallucinatory dream-logic story of tormented desire, guilt and conflict.
With daring imagery, startling effects and editing, feminist undertones and humour to boot, it was banned by the British Board of Film Censors with the words: "this film is so cryptic as to be almost meaningless. If there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable."
Four-piece band MINIMA perform their new score live... underground... beneath London Bridge station.
