Little Deiter Needs to Fly is a feature-documentary made by Werner Herzog, about the extraordinary capture and escape of the German/US pilot Dieter Dengler in Laos (80 mins, 1997).
Herzog found a kindred spirit in German-American pilot and Vietnam veteran, Dieter Dengler.
Like Herzog, Dengler grew up in a Germany reduced to rubble by World War II.
Dengler's stories of hunger and deprivation in the years after the war echo similar stories from Herzog's past.
The story of Little Deiter was also made into feature film Rescue Dawn in 2007, starring Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler.
This film screening is part of a London-wide Werner Herzog film festival; art organisation V22 is screening a series of 21 Werner Herzog films across London this Autumn.
