Every 14 July the streets of France come alive in celebration of the 'storming' of the Bastille and the birth of La République 1789. Once again the party atmosphere 'French style' comes to Borough Market environs with live music, song and dance, street entertainment, theatrical spectacles, give away goodies, outdoor eating and drinking and a traditional finale.
This year's party takes place on the terraces of La Cave, Cafe Brood and The Guildable Manor in Green Dragon Court.
Party-goers are encouraged to dress in the spirit of the event -the best attired, as judged by a celebrity guest, will win a bottle of champagne and deluxe meal for two at La Cave Restaurant.
La Cave - an authentic French restaurant/wine bar - will host live traditional accordion street music and well–known 40s/50s/60s Chansons with Boum! Plus 30s and 40s Gypsy/Swing/Jazz tracks a la Django Reinhardt, providing ambient background music. A la carte dining, classic French fayre -charcuterie and fromage platters- and outdoor bar will be available.
The party atmosphere will continue on the terraces of Cafe Brood and The Guildable Manor with Mediterranean food and drink, consummate street entertainers Les Apaches and some Bastille Day surprises.
Festivities this year will expand into the covered Green Market with traditional bal musette performers Les Apaches leading a java dance contest for the chance to win a bottle of bubbly. Party-goers can swing to 60s pop with Salut les Copines and later jive to Le Rock n Roll, shimmy to North African Rai and boogy to Mediterranean beats.
There'll be a chance to model for Fin-de-siècle artists from The Drawing Room, try feather frivolities and more with les Folliles and Coquettes, sample French Moroccan and Mediterranean treats with Del Aziz, flirt with the 'green fairy' and risk a taste of Absinthe (from the Whisky Exchange), pedal for Médecins du Monde and join the London to Paris cyclists, face the Guillotine (of The London Bridge Experience) or join the revolutionaries, pick-up exciting offers from wandering characters from Southwark Playhouse and the Fashion & Textile Museum and enjoy a few more classic French surprises.
Market trader Baxter will be making sweet and savoury crepes and other hot savouries. Hot food and drink will be available from the adjacent party cafes, The Mudlark pub, an out-door grill by La Cave and surrounding eateries. Drinks will be available from the nearby Globe Tavern.
