Exhibition celebrating Mercy nursing

The Mercy Heritage Centre (Bermondsey) is celebrating 2010 International Year of the Nurse and the 100th anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale with a small exhibition showing the continued nursing care by Sisters of Mercy from the Crimean War (1854-1856) to the present day.

Eight Sisters of Mercy from Bermondsey Convent worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimea and Florence remained in touch with the Community afterwards, writing them many letters.

Nursing Sisters belonging to the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy today work in a variety of roles, including care of the elderly, mental health nursing, complimentary therapies, and healthcare in Kenya and Peru.

The Mercy Heritage Centre (Bermondsey) is open to visitors without appointment on Saturday 23 October.

For those who wish to visit on an alternative occasion, the Sisters are happy to open their home by appointment.
