Southwark Information Centre is to close in October leaving the Borough without any focus for tourists needing advice.
A closing down sale will run until Friday 25 October says manager Heike Herbert who is planning to take a winter holiday. The decision to close has been made by Southwark Council and follows the opening of Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge which has resulted in visitors arriving more from the west than at London Bridge Station.
Southwark Council Tourism Officer Phil Evans insists that the "outlook is good" for a successor Tourist Information Centre on on Bankside. The Council is understood to be considering a riverside space near New Globe Walk.
The existing centre, with its landmark spike at the end of London Bridge, opened in 1999 and has been run on a contract basis. Only a skeleton staff is now left to greet visitors.
