Part-Time
What does being a W&T team member entail?
Working at W&T isn't just about bookselling (and no, you won't find lots of time to read books, tweet or check your gmail account...)
A team member is expected to not only provide friendly and helpful customer service or engage in retail work, you'll also do barista work, serve cake and lunches, haul furniture about, unpack heavy boxes, participate in coordinating events, occasionally take out the garbage, scan and shelve books, contribute towards suggested titles in store, utilise your creativity in making the shopfloor look attractive and inviting, maybe even be asked to add content to our Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr pages.
What should you be like?
You should be hardworking, friendly, a good team player, able to problem solve, flexible, can think quickly on your feet, be willing to learn, love books, enjoy meeting people, someone who is not afraid to show initiative, preferably fairly organised, able to multi-task. Very important prerequisites: you must be responsible and honest. We like honest people, honestly. Ideally, you should also have bookselling or retail experience.
What's W&T all about?
We're a small indie bookshop with a cafe that doubles as a gallery and events space. We have unusual book sections such as Life Stories, Places and Spaces, Social Action, Creativity, and International, aside from bays for Fiction, Art, History... you catch the drift. We host a variety of events - from author readings, panel discussions, poetry performances, exhibition launches to private events. (We occasionally also host events you wouldn't expect in a bookshop e.g. comedy gigs, music performances, even a tap dancing jam!) We are also very much a community space with Tai Chi classes on Saturdays, monthly children storytelling sessions and advice surgeries with local councillors. We aim to provide visitors with an immersive experience where they may encounter stories through a myriad of forms, be it through the books we sell, the art that's hanging on our walls, or the events we host.
Please forward your CV to [email protected] along with a cover letter explaining why you want to join the W&T team. Please tell us a few of your favourite books/authors and why, and references with current contact details (telephone numbers and email addresses). We will endeavour to contact successful applicants within 7 days. If you don't hear from us after that time, it's likely that you haven't been selected for an interview.
