Visitors Officer

Southwark Cathedral

£15,000 pa for 21-hour week

Part-time, initially for 12 months

About this role

The Visitors Officer is responsible for providing a high quality of welcome to all visitors who enter the Cathedral within the context of our “Ministry of Welcome”. You will be responsible for the recruitment, training and management of volunteers who deliver that welcome, and for income generation from visitors.

You will arrive at an exciting time as we are currently undertaking a review of the way in which visitors are welcomed to the Cathedral and the route they follow around the building, with a view to establishing a new Welcome Desk and new visitor entry points. You will have the opportunity to work alongside the Retail Manager in developing proposals for the Welcome Desk and organising a pilot project this summer.

The post is initially for one year and could be extended pending the outcome of the Welcome Desk pilot project.

Person description

You will ideally have some visitors management experience in the heritage or church sector, and some experience of working with volunteers will be an advantage. In sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Christian Church and the Anglican tradition, you will be an excellent communicator, with good IT skills, and able to work largely unsupervised in a small, highly-committed and supportive team.

About Southwark Cathedral

Southwark Cathedral is the oldest Gothic church in London. It is a very busy parish church as well as being the mother church of the Diocese of Southwark. It is also a popular destination for visitors. We are situated in the heart of the vibrant, and every-changing Bankside area close to Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and The Shard.
