Fixed-term three-year contract
An exciting opportunity to develop this leading Business Improvement District's highly regarded sustainable travel programme.
Better Bankside's programme is divided into eight 'themes', each of which is directed by a 'theme group' of businesses. The Smarter Travel theme group was originally established in 2005 as the Travel Planning Theme Group and brings together large and small organisations in government, commercial and non-profit sectors. Current members include staff from Ofcom, CPRE, London Councils, Boodle Hatfield and Transport for London.
The group has gained a reputation for pioneering projects that are then taken up elsewhere. Current examples include Delivery & Service Plans, Colourful Crossings and an e-bike freight service. The density of development, walking flows and congestion are all increasing in Bankside as the area moves from a 9-5 to a vibrant 24 hour economy. The group is therefore looking beyond services for commuters to Bankside and towards business and leisure travellers as well as deliveries. It is also shifting in emphasis towards seeking to influence local government policy and funding at borough and city levels; partnering on projects to improve the streets for walking and cycling; and reducing motor vehicle movements due to commercial deliveries and servicing.
As well as providing services to members, the Smarter Travel programme works in partnership with a number of stakeholders including Transport for London and Network Rail to help shape the future of public transport services for the area.
Further details about the current services provided under the Smarter Travel programme can be found at www.betterbankside.co.uk/travel

Better Bankside is a Business Improvement District (BID) in Southwark, London. Its aim is to make Bankside a thriving place to work, live and visit and, ultimately, the 'best neighbourhood in the world'. Better Bankside was formally established in 2005 and was the third BID in the UK and the second in London.
A Business Improvement District is an independent, business-owned and led company, which seeks to improve a given location for commercial activity. Better Bankside's members are the 600+ companies in the BID area (between Hatfields in the west and London Bridge in the east, and south from the River as far as Union Street, Borough Station and Webber Street) who pay its annual 'levy'. Many of these are heavily involved in the governance of the company.
