The church of St George the Martyr, Southwark seeks to appoint a Heritage Officer to
research and communicate the rich history of the church and local area, and to develop the
church’s work with other groups in the local community.
As part of its vision to be ‘an open, inclusive and welcoming place for people of all ages,
backgrounds and life experiences’, St George’s aims to offer all parts of the local community
opportunities to learn from and engage with its heritage. We currently offer a community
café and are about to begin a Carer and Toddler group, with many other community groups
meeting in our modern and spacious crypt. The successful applicant will contribute to this
work through building a heritage programme which helps to provide activities for a diverse
population and bring different parts of the community together, playing a significant part in
building the cohesion of this area.
St George’s is a Church of England parish church prominently situated on the crossroads
beside Borough tube station, just south of London Bridge. This site has been in continual use
since Roman times, and there has been a church on the site since the early twelfth century.
The church has important connections with Chaucer and the Battle of Agincourt. The
existing church, a local landmark, was built in 1736 and includes a historically significant
organ that in part predates the church. St George’s features extensively in Dickens’s Little
Dorrit, and the character herself is depicted in the east window of the church.
