SE1 heritage strategy unveiled

English Heritage last month revealed its blueprint for Borough and Bankside to deal with the challenges posed to the historic character of the area during rapid regeneration - led by Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe, Vinopolis, the extended Jubilee Line and the building of the HQ for the for the Mayor and Assembly for London.

English Heritage expressed concern about the lack of co-ordination between the developments, and Railtrack's plan to build a viaduct over the now thriving Borough Market as part of the Thameslink 2000 project.

The government agency has asked urban designer Kim Wilkie to come up with proposals to create more urban spaces and improve pedestrian flow.
