Shoemaker's Holiday returns to SE1

The Shoemaker's Holiday is again being performed in Southwark exactly 400 years after its première at the Rose Theatre.

The venue this time for Thomas Dekker's play The Shoemaker's Holiday is Southwark Playhouse in Southwark Bridge Road. The rumbustious comedy follows the career of Simon Eyre, the mad shoemaker of Tower Street, and his rise to become Lord Mayor of London. The play is said to be a timely tale since today there is the contest to be Mayor of London at the nearby Tooley Street GLA building.

The Troupe Theatre Company production is directed by Simon Purse and has a thirteen strong cast. Troupe has performed at Hampton Court, Lincoln's Inn and Shakespeare's Globe.

  • All tickets are just £3 on Mondays 5 and 12 July. See listing for other prices and times.
  • Meanwhile the Globe is repeating its July 1599 bill by staging Julius Caesar.
