Another footbridge to link Bankside with the City

Whilst the Millennium Bridge remains closed plans have been unveiled for another Thames footbridge linking Bankside to the City.

Attached to the existing Cannon Street Railway Bridge, the new crossing's construction cost would be at least half the final Millennium Bridge bill. It would also remain below the present height of the 1860 railway bridge and therefore not intrude on the skyline.

Work could begin early next year if the plans, by the non profit-making Cannon Footbridge Trust, are approved by both Southwark Council and the Corporation of London.

Meanwhile the Millennium Bridge trustees are under fire from the Environment Agency for dumping rocks on the natural beach below the new bridge.
