The Union Theatre has been transformed into a warm forest clearing for seven short plays around a camp fire in the in-house Union of Shorts series.
The first, Shooting Stars by Miska Hennar and directed by Sasha Regan, has a good first professional stage performance by Hazel Lucas.
Then the same forest switches from the US to England for Indiginous People which sees Iain Ward (who has appeared at the Young Vic and with 'Dame Edna Everage') easily open a wine bottle without a corkscrew. He is joined by Gillian McCafferty (Pie in the Sky and EastEnders) for the first big sex scene. The subject features strongly in this series of stories which see urban dwellers trying to cope with the countrside's snakes and strange locals. The camp fire even becomes the focus for a women's summer school with Hazel Lucas again in the large but not quite all-female cast. The full cast of 16 actors gives more than two hours of humour, tension and surprise in the intimate space. A perfect escape for a winter evening.
