In Praise of Women at the.gallery@oxo

Anne Critchley

Zimbabwe is a troubled country nowadays, but the work of its sculptors is alive and well judging by a vibrant exhibition at the.gallery@oxo which runs until 22 August.

Entitled 'In Praise of Women' the exhibition portrays extraordinary works in stone by mainly female artists. One of them is Locardia Ndandarika along with her daughter Virginia. 63-year-old Locardia did not learn to read and write until she was 40. When she first started to sculpt she had to hide her work from her husband, also a sculptor.

Her works portray the innate wisdom and beauty of women in diverse ways. Other works in the exhibition portray women as mythological figures, mothers, spirits, expressed with great power, in realistic or abstract form.

Visit this exhibition and be inspired by these stone sculptures and the women who made them.
