Sainsbury's secured planning consent for the redevelopment of the Stamford Street site in February 2002. The Beetham Organization is now expected to prepare new plans for the future of the site, which is likely to lead to a new planning application.

The Beetham Organization describes itself as of Britain's leading property developers, specialising in "high quality mixed-use city-centre developments".

The news will be a blow to local residents who were expecting a Sainsbury's Central store to open on the site.
