Residents of Southwark and Lambeth can now arrange for unwanted IT equipment to be collected from their homes for recycling or refurbishment.
REALISE is working with Southwark-based recycling and refurbishment organisation OFFERS to provide a collection service for unwanted IT equipment from households in Lambeth, Southwark, Westminster and the City of London.
Where possible computers are refurbished and upgraded then made available at low cost. Any unusable equipment is disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. Collections cost £5 for a complete PC system, with additional equipment charged for on an item by item basis.
This is a pilot project examining the feasibility and effectiveness of low-cost domestic equipment collections, and the effect of promotion on take-up. This project will also be useful in raising awareness of recycling and reuse generally.
The service is also available to community and voluntary groups in the area.
The REALISE IT Network of computer refurbishers and recyclers provides solutions for all IT disposal needs. Members adhere to a code of conduct guaranteeing data security and service standards. The network also supplies refurbished equipment, ranging from budget internet ready systems for as little as £50 to high specification machines at a fraction of the cost of new computers.
