An extraordinary scene tonight was the sight of commuters trailing across the Millennium Bridge from the City of London.
These were hired workers who had agreed to go home from the office via the bridge to test the wobble. By nightfall 2000 ticket holders had gathered in the rain ready for several hours of mass walking across the River Thames.
Although the bridge's PR company had done its best to keep the event secret some residents and press were on the riverside to witness the test preparations.
The official line tonight is that if the tests do not produce any alarming results then the bridge could open at Easter – two years behind schedule.
