The Hungerford Car Park next to Jubilee Gardens could be transformed into a tropical beach this summer if Lambeth Council gives the go-ahead.

Plans for a similar urban beach in Potters Fields near Tower Bridge were halted last summer after objections from local residents.

South Bank Beach Ltd applied to Lambeth Council at the end of February for permission for temporary use of Hungerford Car Park and part of Queen's Walk as a beach and outdoor cinema, including cafe and bar, together with associated entertainment facilities.

Planned entertainment includes beach volleyball, mobile barbecues, a mobile library, children's activities, water spray area, mobile masseuses, yoga and community awareness campaigns.

The organisers want to erect a 7 metre high temporary cinema screen with raked seating to form a cinema auditorium.

The application also includes single storey cinema box office structures, single storey cafe building, single storey site cabins, temporary WC structures and the installation of decking accross the site.

Short local history films from the BFI archives could be shown between the feature films.
