The Anchor pub on Bankside has reopened as the London flagship of the 126-strong Premier Lodge chain owned by Scottish & Newcastle. The 56 bedroom addition to the historic pub has cost £3.5 million and created 60 new jobs.
"The budget hotel sector is the most exciting part of the hotel market," said Scottish & Newcastle chairman Brian Stewart before performing the opening ceremony. The Premier Lodge brand boasts the largest double beds in any budget hotel and television in all rooms visible from the bath.
At the Anchor Bankside all rooms, including double rooms, cost £69.95 and children stay at no extra charge.
The Anchor is partly 17th-century but there has been a pub on the site since Shakespeare's time when Bankside was part of the Bishop of Winchester's estate.
