Southwark registrar June Lewis finished her career on a high on Sunday when she conducted the marriage of two runners during the London Marathon.

June has been the superintendent registrar for thousands of happy couples during 25 years in the job, but said she wanted to do something a bit out of the ordinary for her final one.

So when Katie and Gordon Fryer decided to run the first 13 miles in full wedding attire, stop at Tower Bridge to say their vows, then dash off to complete the course, June was the perfect choice for registrar.

June said: “It was a great swansong for me. I have married a couple during the marathon before, but they weren't runners, just spectators. This one was wonderful. It was a very emotional day for everyone, and certainly one ceremony I'll never forget.”
