Five people were injured in a serious traffic collision in Southwark Street on Thursday morning. The road was closed for several hours leading to tailbacks in surrounding streets.

The emergency services were called to the junction of Southwark Street and Hopton Street shortly before 11am on Thursday following a collison involving a British Transport Police van and a car. The police vehicle hit a building.

A woman aged about 30 was cut free from the car and taken to a south London hospital. Her injuries are serious but not life threatening. The air ambulance landed on the lawn at Tate Modern.

A male car passenger and five British Transport poilice officers were treated for minor injuries.

Southwark Street was closed for at least two hours, leading to heavy traffic on surrounding streets including Great Suffolk Street and Blackfriars Road.
