A distinctive new landmark has arrived outside the Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre. The Ecopod will provide information about the regeneration of the area.
The inside of the pod will be used during the day as an exhibition space, while the translucent polycarbonate exterior allows films to be projected from the inside of the pod to the outside after dark. Information about the proposed Cross River Tram is available at the moment.
"Powered by solar energy and warmed by a wood-chip burner, the Ecopod's green credentials are a symbol of the green principles underpinning the Elephant and Castle regeneration programme," boasts Cllr Richard Thomas, executive member for regeneration. "The pod will be in place for the life of the regeneration programme."
The pod was due to have been installed in June or July but delays with building contractors pushed the launch back to November.
Southwark Council recently proposed a multi-utility services company (MUSCo) which will provide locally generated heat and electricity, supply non-potable water and build a fibre optic communications infrastructure to the redeveloped Elephant and Castle.
