Newspaper stories often gloss over or hide personal tales of suffering or heroism. The characters in this unusual play fight to emerge from written texts by spoken words of resistance, anger, longing or flights of fancy.
Listening to the unemphatic Arabic, (through English sur-titles), we attune our ear to known words, recognising the repeated ‘shaheed' or ‘martyr'. and empathise with the everyday frustrations of not being able to escape, literally, from the mounds of newsprint. The characters remind us how is is possible to maintain dignity in the bleakest circumstances, and we shoulod be glad to be so brave.
