More than 10 million visits have been made to Tate Modern on Bankside since it opened in May 2000, it was revealed yesterday.
Forty per cent of visitors were under 35, more than 22,000 children attended free workshops and 12,000 teachers received training from curators.
Research earlier this year records that 50% of visitors to Tate Modern are returning for the second time, a massive 100% increase since November 2000, and that 46% of visitors are doing so within a year of their first visit.
Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate said: 'We are delighted to have received our ten millionth visitor barely two years after opening. This is a great success for Southwark, London and the arts as a whole'.
