Waterloo's mainline, Eurostar and underground stations were closed for more than an hour after a man was detained as he tried to pass through the departures area at Waterloo International carrying "suspicious articles".

Parts of Waterloo Road and York Road were sealed off, leading to huge traffic tailbacks and major disruption to bus services. Traffic in nearby Blackfriars Road was brought to a standstill.

Passengers arriving at Waterloo to catch trains were advised by police to walk along the riverside to Vauxhall to continue their journeys.

The incident began at 12.15pm and the cordons were lifted at approximately 1.30pm.
