The downstream walkway on Hungerford Bridge opened this morning.
This new crossing replaces the original and familiar line of the footbridge on Hungerford's eastern side.
The first Hungerford Bridge was a pedestrian suspension tollbridge leading to the former Hungerford Market on the north bank and was built in the 1840s by Brunel. Today's additions are by architect Alex Lifschutz.
The footbridge on the upstream side opened earlier this year. Fifty years ago this side had a temporary Bailey Bridge for the Festival of Britain but the permanent replacment was postponed. Finance for the latest improvements come from the Cross River Partnership and the GLA.
